Yours Humanly Donates $20,000 in Educational Resources to Puerto Rico

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Nov. 25, 2019 - PRLog -- Yours Humanly, a Northern California-based nonprofit that provides underprivileged children in underserved communities across the world access to quality education, has donated $20,000 to aid three schools in Puerto Rico that are still suffering the effects of 2017's catastrophic Hurricane Maria that killed more than 2,900 people, permanently closed hundreds of schools, and left thousands of children without local educational opportunities.

"People are either leaving the island to get their children into school or the children are commuting miles and miles to go to a school that is still open," says Yours Humanly Founder & CEO Sunny Singh. "Still, not one of the schools has the space or resources to handle that many extra children.  We raised money to support schools in Puerto Rico any way we could after the hurricane, though we found it a slow process to actually get the funds to where they will help the most children."

After a year of exhaustive research and with assistance from the Teachers' Federation of Puerto Rico, Yours Humanly identified three schools in great need and chose to split the $20,000 three ways. Escuela Especializada en Bellas Artes Pablo Casals in Bayomón and Inocencio A. Montero Primary School in Utuado each received $5,000 to assist with elementary school programs and much needed classroom supplies.

Movimiento al Rescate de Mi Escuela, a volunteer organization that rescued Lorencita Ramìrez Middle School in Toa Baja after it had been arbitrarily shut down by the Department of Education in May 2018, received $10,000. The organization has restored the school for the children who previously studied there and returned a safe space to local citizens that benefits the entire community. Revived activities include tutoring, arts, sports, sewing classes, community meetings, and other programs and services taking place throughout the week. Funds were used in part to purchase fans; academic and art materials; paint to restore the school; equipment to rehabilitate the library such as tables, chairs, computers, and printers; equipment to rehabilitate the gym; and backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and other critical school supplies.
