MOSCOW, Russian Federation - Nov. 19, 2019 - PRLog -- An innovative fiberoptic Heating Networks Monitoring System (OMEGA HNMS) has been presented in Riga (Latvia) in November marking a new step towards meeting energy consumption goals set for European countries for 2020.

HNMS has been designed by the Moscow based OMEGA scientific company ( which looks back at ten years of development and implementation of OMEGA SMEO (Systems of Monitoring for Extended Objects) based on the use of optical fiber as distributed sensor. The Leak Detection and Activity Control System (OMEGA LDACS) is the OMEGA SMEO modification for implementation on oil and gas pipelines and is installed on 6000 kilometers of both European and Asian pipelines preventing tie-ins, leaks and potentially dangerous infiltrations into protected zones. The pioneering implementation of artificial neuron networks secures a high precision of the detection of the event and its identification as well.

In HNMS the OMEGA DTS provides temperature resolution up to 0.10°C and up to 20 km to each side of the central unit. Being the centerpiece of the HNMS, OMEGA DTS comprises a set of hardware and software tools providing continuous pipeline monitoring. The violation of thermal insulation of water pipes signaled by HNMS is fraught with significant economic losses.

Since the HNMS is equipped with a DTS sensor, the system measures in real time mode fluctuations in the temperature field on and around the pipe. An important possibility arises to control the state of polyurethane foam insulation of pipes, in particular, areas with assumed high moisture content of the insulation.

Besides, the OMEGA HNMS provides direct measurement of temperature on the surface of thermal insulation, monitors the insulation moisture, fulfills the changes assessment in heat losses depending on the coolant temperature and prevents the possibility of pipelines freezing which obviously is of particular interest for Northern states.

With preliminary decided installation in Russia and Latvia the OMEGA HNMS will be adopted to local conditions. This step is expected to contribute to energy consumption decrease by 2020 defined for Britain by 27%, by 17% for Latia, 57% for Estonia and by 36% for the Czech Republic. For a number of countries, the loss prevention during transportation through heating networks could be particularly interesting due to increased percentage of households transferred recently to centralized heating: Britain is among those countries.
