The study which ranked 317 of the largest U.S. cities, was based upon the following factors:

• Mean salaries for doctors in each city

• A cost of living index

• The availability of jobs for doctors as measured by location quotient

Key Findings

• The #1 city for doctors is Janesville, WI, which offers an average salary of $270,640, and has a 10% lower cost of living than the rest of the nation. The city hosts 133% more jobs for doctors on a per-capita basis compared with the U.S. average.

• The best cities for doctors are midsize cities, with 5 of the top 10, and 28 of the top 50 cities having populations between 150,000 and 500,000. Midsize cities offer a balance between enough population density to have patients but also without the high cost of living. Cities in the midwest and east coast dominated the top 50 list.
