The study which ranked 380 of the largest U.S. cities, was based upon the following factors:

• Mean salaries for teachers in each city

• A cost of living index

• The availability of jobs for teachers as measured by location quotient

Key Findings

• The #1 city for teachers is Hanford, CA, which offers an average salary of $80,330, which is 56% higher than the national average. The city hosts 107% more jobs for teachers on a per-capita basis compared with the U.S. average.

• The best cities for teachers are midsize cities, with 6 of the top 10, and 23 of the top 50 cities having populations between 150,000 and 500,000. The family demographic and distance create a need for a variety of schools and districts. Cities in the east and midwest made up 54% of the top 50 list with cities in the south and west making up 18% and 16%, respectively.

• The top large cities for teachers are El Paso, TX; Bakersfield, CA; and McAllen, TX. The top midsize cities are Hanford, CA; Laredo, TX; and Las Cruces, NM. The top small cities are Grand Island, NE; Hinesville, GA; and New Bedford, MA.
