Indiana charter school awarded grant funding from ACR/JAMS Foundation
Gary Lighthouse Academy will use funds to train youth leaders to reduce violence, bullying
By: Lighthouse Academies
As part of ACR/JAMS' Initiative for Students and Youth, nonprofit organizations serving youth could submit projects that would reduce youth bullying and violence and increase the development of conflict resolution education (CRE) skills.
Gary Lighthouse Academy will receive $40,000 in year one and $20,000 in year two of the "Youth Leading Peers in Reduction of Violence/Bullying via Social Emotional Learning" pilot program, which will train students in grades 10-12 to initiate, facilitate and lead conflict resolution processes, including restorative circles and peer juries, in an effort to reduce youth violence and bullying and promote mutual respect and non-violence.
"Youth Leading Peers" will build on the success of the school's of Project Intervention, a program that introduced restorative circles, peer juries, and peace paths to teen scholars during the 2013-14 academic year. Project Intervention led to a decline in bullying and violence and an 80 percent drop in suspensions. The new program funded by ACR/JAMS will enhance the original program by training trainers and adapting the program to the digital environment, where much bullying occurs.
"We are delighted to have been awarded a grant by JAMS/ACR," said Khori Whittaker, CEO of Lighthouse Academies. "These funds will ultimately help our scholar population at Gary CPA learn how to build healthy relationships and resolve conflict in a constructive way."
