Literally, his first week of medical school, Dr. Kenneth Benjamin Hughes was involved in a serious automobile accident. Though he did not die, there were days when he certainly thought that would have been a better option. Although he survived this near death experience, he was not right by any stretch for many years. Dr. Hughes ultimately had to have several surgeries to repair his back, both shoulders, his jaw, and his abdominal wall.

Though Dr. Hughes was grateful to be alive after a serious accident, he could have never anticipated the kind of pain experienced and the amount of time it would take to rehabilitate. .By far the worst life-altering or life-shattering event was the injury to his back. The nerves were compressed on both sides of the lower back causing excruciating pain and leg atrophy.  Dr. Hughes had gone from someone who could literally do anything physically to someone who could barely walk.  Dr. Hughes eventually had surgery and did not move much from the bed for a period of months. He started slowly rehabilitating himself though it took years to rebuild his physique.

The truth is that no one is ever prepared for something like this.
