Pittsburgh Hires National Testing Network To Diversify Fire Service
PITTSBURGH - Oct. 22, 2019 - PRLog -- National Testing Network, Inc. (NTN), the leader in providing equitable recruitment and employment testing for public safety departments, was recognized last month by FireRescue1 for being awarded a Barrier Assessment project for the Pittsburgh Fire Department. This Barrier Assessment is an effort to create a study of fire bureau hiring practices and the inability to attract more women and minorities.
In the article, Janet Manuel, Pittsburgh's director of human resources, said "the National Testing Network would collect hiring data, conduct focus groups in city neighborhoods, compare the makeup of the fire bureau with other cities similar in size and prepare a report on the findings."
When asked about the opportunity, National Testing Network President, Carl Swander, Ph.D., said, "We're excited to see more large fire and police departments take the initiative to perform barrier assessments in order to increase female and diverse candidates into their workforce. We've done similar studies with Washington D.C., Baltimore, San Francisco, San Jose, Denver, and Long Beach, with very positive results. Process change is extremely difficult, so it is critical for us to provide the necessary data and information to make informed decisions on how to more effectively recruit and hire female and diverse candidates."
The outcome of this work would result in information related to the specific barriers within the Pittsburgh firefighter hiring process that impact the ability to hire women and ethnically diverse candidates. NTN will assess hiring policies and practices ensuring there is an equal opportunity for all qualified participants applying for firefighter positions. Areas of strength and weakness throughout the City's policies and practices will be identified, and possible solutions will be recommended to rectify areas of weaknesses.
