The letters and words used to describe members of gender and sexual minorities keep coming. What do they all mean? Why do they keep changing? How do you keep up? Come listen, learn and ask your own questions at a community forum, Decoding the Alphabet Soup," on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 6-7:30 pm at St. Barnabas in Falmouth. The event is sponsored by a coalition consisting of Gays, Lesbians and Others of Woods Hole (GLOW), Falmouth No Place for Hate, Cape Cod Pride, Inc, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays Cape Cod (PFLAG) and Waquoit Congregational Church. "We are co-hosting this panel at an important time in our country's history. With the Supreme Court hearing arguments in two LGBTQ workplace rights cases on October 8 and the rise of hate crimes in this country, we feel it's important to have this discussion in our community" said Sheri White, Co-Chair of GLOW. The panel consists of people representing a spectrum of the LBGTQI community, including people who identitfy as transgender, gender fluid, lesbian and gay. "It's incredibly important that we educate people to be able to respond to others about LGBTIQ issues," said Paula Degree, a panelist. "I look forward to participating to support our youth who still face so many obstacles." Denise LaBarre, President of PFLAG Cape Cod adds "I have discovered that personal connections reduce barriers, promote respect and understanding, and build a stronger local community. This is something that affects all of us." All are Welcome The entire community is welcome to attend. The panelists will speak from their personal experience. The panel discussion will be followed by a social reception to allow for more informal dialog and questions.
