TORONTO - Oct. 9, 2019 - PRLog -- Procyon Wildlife Centre is being celebrated by family owned reclamation firm Textile Waste Diversion for diverting over 11 tonnes of textiles from landfill in three years.

The wildlife rehabilitation centre has been participating in a fundraising campaign with the sustainable side effect of landfill diversion by collecting used clothing and other household textiles from the local community.

Tia Carroll-Vokey of Textile Waste Diversion said,  "The best part of my job is seeing how something that otherwise would have ended up in the garbage is now helping financially support a great cause, while also supporting jobs. Every 1000 tonnes collected is estimated to create 7 direct and 15 indirect jobs. It's a win for charities, the environment and economy. I wish everyone knew they could do this."

The Procyon Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre, which is located in Beeton Ontario, rescues, rehabilitates and safely releases hundreds of orphaned and injured wild animals each year throughout Southern Ontario. The animals are cared for by specially-trained and dedicated volunteers, and once they are healthy and able to care for themselves, they are released into their original natural habitats. The Procyon Wildlife Facility includes a triage-first aid area for sick and injured animals, nurseries for infant care, and outdoor enclosures where animals are transitioned back into their wild environment. There is also a learning centre where children and community groups can learn about wild animals and view wildlife rehabilitation in progress.

"The centre depends upon volunteers, donations and fundraisers to keep it going, which is why Procyon is thrilled to partner with Textile Waste Diversion each year. This fundraiser not only helps cover the cost of food, medical treatment and supplies, and building maintenance, but it also helps protect wildlife habitats and the environment by reducing landfill waste. It's a win-win partnership!" said longtime volunteer Joanne Scott.
