The Adult MHFA Two-Day training teaches people how to identify, understand and help others who may be experiencing a mental health issues. It is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid. The course is aimed at adults who wish to become an appointed Mental Health First Aider at their place of work or want to support their family and friends who may be experiencing mental health issues.
The course teaches people how to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis, and potentially stop a crisis from happening. Delegates learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support others while keeping themselves safe. They also learn how to empower others to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of symptoms. Attendees also gain an understanding of how to support positive wellbeing and tackle stigma in the world around them.
The course is split into four manageable sessions, each teaching practical MHFA skills that can be used daily. Content includes sections on depression, anxiety, addictions, suicide, listening skills, crisis first aid after a traumatic event, personality disorders, self harm, eating disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia and more. Learning takes place through a combination of workshop activities, presentations and group discussions, with each session built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan.
