Morven Museum & Garden Announces Fall Programming

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sept. 30, 2019 - PRLog -- Morven Museum & Garden, a National Historic Landmark, is pleased to announce a robust range of fall offerings that have been curated to inform, engage, and entertain the larger community.  With themes encompassing harvest traditions, historical knitting, chamber orchestra performances, and women in the American Revolution, there is something for everyone this season. As part of the national conversation in commemoration of slavery in America, Morven is hosting an ivy-league scholar in partnership with the Historical Society of Princeton.  All events are at 55 Stockton Street, Princeton, N.J.

Committed to Memory: The Art of the Slave Ship Icon
Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Morven is honored to welcome Dr. Cheryl Finley of Cornell University to share her extraordinary book Committed to Memory: The Art of the Slave Ship Icon with an illustrated lecture and book signing. The day's events provide an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations surrounding the 400th anniversary of the first documentation of enslaved Africans having landed in North America. Additional support for Dr. Finley's program is provided in part by the Historical Society of Princeton. Tickets: $0-27

Harvest Festival: Celebrating Apples, Richard "the Duke" Stockton's Cider, and More
Saturday, Oct. 26, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Morven celebrates its second generation of Stocktons with a free family day highlighting apples, cider, and harvest time activities popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The day's festivities include costumed reenactors and hands-on demonstrations and displays, including cider making, distilling, and preserving. Families will enjoy live period music, dances of the time, explanation of foodways to America, and take-home crafts, including corn husk dolls and apple printing.

Historic Knitting Workshop with Callie Lasch
Saturday, Nov. 9, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Inspired by the image of "Maggi knitting" in Morven's Robert Wood Johnson, Jr. gallery, Callie Lasch, Founder of the Center for Knit & Crochet, has developed a day-long workshop, including a museum tour, lecture, take-home project, and "making" experience, focused on a knitting and crochet project to be donated to a local Veteran's Hospital in honor of Veterans' Day. New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra Salon: Mythos
Sunday, Nov. 10, 3:00 p.m.
A three-part series of string quartet pieces inspired by ancient myths and legends in Morven's Stockton Education Center, these short works are mixed with lively and informative discussions with NBCO Artistic Director Mark Hyczko and his musicians.

The Nov. 10 program, NBCO's second appearance at Morven, includes Lethe by leading opera composer Thomas Adès, Stacey Garrop's Athena Triumphant, and Laurie Schwendinger's Creatures.  The ensemble will also premiere a work commissioned especially for this event by the New Jersey Composer's Guild from student composer Molly Herron.  The NBCO's concertmaster, Ruotao Mao of Princeton, will lead the quartet. An Evening with Barbara Oberg, Martha King, and Annis Stockton: Women in the American Revolution: Gender, Politics, and the Domestic World

What was life like for women in the era of the American Revolution? Gain these insights from the editor and an author of an essay on Morven's Annis Boudinot Stockton in Women in the American Revolution: Gender, Politics, and the Domestic World, Barbara B. Oberg. Oberg will provide insights into the book's origin as well as how the essays enrich our understanding of women in the Revolution beyond traditional narratives. Martha King, Senior Editor, Papers of Thomas Jefferson at Princeton University Library, will give a short talk on Annis Boudinot Stockton, who resided at Morven, based on her essay in the book. Morven Museum & Garden is home to its permanent exhibition, focused on New Jersey history, along with rotating special exhibitions. Open through October 27, New Jersey Baseball: From the Cradle to the Major Leagues, 1855–1915, tells the story of the state's important role in the history of early organized baseball. It describes the nature of the first New Jersey baseball clubs, the differences between 19th century baseball and the modern game, and covers areas of special interest, such as the African-American experience and women's participation.

On Nov. 15, Morven will open  Dreaming of Utopia: Roosevelt, New Jersey. The first of its kind, this exhibition will examine the history of Roosevelt, from its early days as Jersey Homesteads, a New Deal experiment in cooperative living, to a twenty-first century arts community.

In the 1930s, town developer Benjamin Brown envisioned farmland in Monmouth County as an idyllic location for a utopian community to provide a sharp contrast to crowded city conditions. Though in time the cooperative living experiment failed, writers, musicians, and artists like Ben Shahn made Roosevelt home. This exhibition features 100 loans from 25 different collections.  Artists include: Ani Rosskam, Jonathan Shahn, Sol Libsohn, Louis Kahn, Ben Shahn, Bernarda Bryson Shahn, Edwin Rosskam, Louise Rosskam, Otto Wester, Gregorio Prestopino, David Stone Martin, Stefan Martin, Jacob Landau, Robert Mueller, Edward Schlinski, and Liz Dauber.
