University students join hurricane relief efforts

On September 27th, in response to the devastation in the Bahamas from Hurricane Dorian, Stetson Athletics and the Stetson Student-Athlete Advisory Council are partnering with local Palm Beach County's Rescue Life Inc, Diamond Girl Media, Inc., and Orange Theory Studios to collect emergency relief items for the people on Grand Bahama Island.

"The Bahamas were devastated by Dorian and the Stetson community is committed to providing help," Director of Athletics Jeff Altier (https://gohatters.com/staff.aspx?staff=2) said. As Stetson fans flocked to the stadium for the next football game, they also began filling the large box truck that will be arriving at Operation 300 this Friday in Stuart.

About this program
The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), which is a regular function of every athletics department in the NCAA. Each program is represented by at least two student-athletes on the SAAC (football has 4) and they do community service and other activities throughout the year. Each year they hold a canned food drive leading up to Thanksgiving with all of the proceeds going to a local food bank. They also collect toiletries during the year (hotel soap, shampoo, etc.) and donate that. They are involved in the MeStrong 5K race for breast cancer awareness and other projects during the year. In the spring they also hold an awards ceremony called "The Hattemys" where they honor the best among all the student-athletes, coaches and staff for their successes during the year.

This year SAAC picked the Rescue Life Hurricane Relief Group.
