Danny Murillo spent most of his teens and twenties incarcerated. During his last years there, he got inspired to earn a GED and finish high school. After his release, he was accepted to University of California Berkeley, where he met Steven, someone who also lacked real schooling experience, and was in the criminal justice system. After finding each other and sharing that feeling of isolation from the rest of the school, they started the Underground Scholars Initiative, a group that supports students impacted by incarceration. Danny graduated from Berkeley with a bachelors degree in Ethnic studies, and was a national policy intern at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights where he researched the economic impact of incarceration of communities of color. Today, Danny works to empower formerly incarcerated students that have made the transition from prison to higher education.
