-- Hyundai Motor India launched the country's first fully-electric SUV, the Kona EV at a price of Rs. 25.3 lakh for the single-tone and 25.5 lakh for the dual-tone.
As for the appearance, the Kona Electric looks identical to its conventional-
powered namesake – barring the omission of an exhaust and a front grille, of course. The Kona EV features the brand's modern split-headlamp design, with the DRLs in place of the headlamp and the chunky headlamp mounted at the bumper. In profile, the 17-inch wheels look scintillating, and the plastic cladding that runs around the body adds a bit to the rugged SUV appeal. Inside the cabin, the first thing that catches your fancy is the neatly integrated 8.0-inch touchscreen. Although the touchscreen is nice and intuitive, it misses out on Hyundai's Blue Link connectivity features. The steering wheel – borrowed from the Venue – feels nice to hold. Then there's the ventilated front seats, fully-digital instrument cluster and the wireless charging feature – which is neatly hidden under the silver centre console – that exude a sense of quality from the cabin.
We had the opportunity to drive the Kona at the Buddh International Circuit. The Kona features a permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor that's mated to a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery. As per ARAI, the Kona EV should deliver a claimed range of 452kms on a single charge. So, Hyundai has done its bit by offering a stupendous range to overcome the range anxiety. However, there are certain things that still aren't in favour of electric mobility in the country. First and foremost, with a rather limited charging infrastructure, the consumer has to take the responsibility of charging the car. Secondly, considering that 70% of electricity in the country is generated by burning coal, it's still unclear if an electric vehicle will pollute lesser than a combustion-powered vehicle. But, however, Hyundai has still managed to deliver an amazing package with the Kona EV. And it's a breeze to watch how the country's second-largest manufacturer has successfully brought in the first electric SUV.
