Fusion Academy Takes Proactive Steps by Engaging LEAD, Inc
By: Let's Empower, Advocate, and Do, Inc.
One Fusion staff member commented, "The feedback I received was all positive, and everyone stated how important it is to continue the conversation on this topic so we can better serve our students.... The key takeaway was that teachers felt better prepared to handle a crisis situation, should one occur, as well as being more mindful if a student's behavior changes/escalates."
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one is five youths suffer from a severe mental illness and 70% of youth suffering from mental illness fail to receive treatment. These conditions can impact students' performance in school, relationships with their peers, and well-being.
Youth Mental Health First Aid certification taught Fusion Academy staff to identity, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth (ages 8-24).
Through proactive mental health education, LEAD builds school-wide resilience, trains staff to reach out and provide initial help to students experiencing crisis, and ensures a safe and nurturing learning environment.
In fact, this is the third YMHFA certification at Loudon's Fusion Academy in 2019! So far, 60 Fusion staff members and teachers have been certified. To date, LEAD has trained thousands of educators in this course!
