HERNDON, Va. - Aug. 29, 2019 - PRLog -- On Friday, August 30th at the Hyatt Regency in Herndon, Virginia, Ugbajo Itsekiri USA, Inc. will crown the first Miss Ugbajo 2019. This will be more than just a beauty pageant, it will be a celebration of Itsekiri culture and an opportunity to ensure that the culture thrives among the generations growing up in the United States. The event will showcase the unique fashions of the Itsekiri, as well as a display of knowledge of the Itsekiri homeland. Contestants will also get the opportunity to dazzle the crowd with their own talents. The winner will be selected by a panel of judges from around the country, based on who provides the best representation of Itsekiri culture.

The Miss Ugbajo Itsekiri Pageant will be one of the first events of the 22nd Annual Ugbajo Itsekiri USA, Inc. Convention and will also serve as an opportunity for the more than 400 attendees to reacquaint themselves with fellow Itsekiri from other parts of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Nigeria. The event begins at 7:00 pm and is the primary activity for the young adults of the organization.

The convention's theme this year is Building Wellness & Healthy Communities. Funds raised during the program help Ugbajo Itsekiri, Inc. continue to conduct its mission in Delta State, Nigeria.  On Saturday morning, members will get updates on the mission and issues still facing fellow Itsekiri at home. Since 1997, this event has raised over $500,000 to fund Ugbajo Itsekiri USA's efforts which include sight restoration projects, providing access to clean water and education. The organization's impact has led to restoring sight to 3000 patients with cataracts, creating 5 boreholes providing access to clean water to 130,000 people and supporting more than 80 STEM students in Nigerian universities with scholarships to help them further their education.

The Itsekiri National Association (Washington-Baltimore CMSA) is this year's regional host.  Locally, the organization of 50 people has worked to build relationships with other Nigerian ethnic groups in the area, donated school supplies and over $1000 to local homeless shelters and helped to prepare meals for the homeless at DC Central Kitchen.

Ugbajo Itsekiri is a non-profit organization registered in the United States and headquartered in Washington, DC. The National organization and its ten regional affiliates are dedicated to the promotion of Itsekiri unity, progress and strength; and to the protection and support of Itsekiri culture, customs, and heritage in the United States and in the homeland.
