"Love Me" by 8-rix: summer pop for 2019Two veteran pop writers and a mystery singer unite for Europe's summer pop anthem
By: Bonk Music They're pop. A bit trap in the chorus. A bit #metoo in the lyrics. "It's not complicated," "Love Me" is available as a single on most platforms as of August 2019. A HD lyric video is available on request. Lyricist Michael Leahy was "the accidental lyricist". "I fell into it," he remembers. "Back in the early 90s, I was hanging around the music scene in Brussels, and found myself helping different bands with the words." What was little more than a favour for friends got serious when he was asked to write for the runaway pop phenomenon 2 Unlimited. They had scored a few hits, but when it came to doing an album, they found themselves caught for time. "The producer was anxious to get something out quickly – very quickly," says Leahy. "The singers were doing promo all the time and couldn't keep up. So I was called in." Other projects included soul singer CB Milton (now Clarence Bekker), singer-songwriter Perry Rose and a project based on Johann Strauss melodies. Herman Martin is a self-taught composer and session musician originally from Gloucestershire, UK. Funk was his first love, playing bass and piano in a succession of bands. He later spent several years touring with Ted Milton's Blurt before finally settling in Brussels in the nineties. His best-known work is for the cult TV series Cody Lyoko. He co-composed the soundtrack of four full series, earning him the undying respect of a generation of young TV addicts. "The challenge was to deal with a style that combined straight 2D 'cartoon' animation, with the new 3D animation," he remembers. For both of them, 8-rix represents the point where two very different tastes meet: pure pop. "Yeah, a great singer with a great chorus." YouTube : youtu.be/lQIn0c6J- End
