HIALEAH, Fla. - Aug. 27, 2019 - PRLog -- At 6 foot 8 inches and 225 pounds, 19-year-old Travis Wright from Napier Boys' High School in Marewa, New Zealand started attending basketball camps and training sessions from early on.

The power forward/center has secured an American basketball scholarship from Florida National University Hialeah Campus. He'll arrive on September 13th, just before his first game for the Conquistadors in October.

Wright will pursue a four-year degree in Hotel Business Management (https://www.fnu.edu/prospective-students/our-programs/select-a-program/associate-of-arts-degree-programs/hospitality-management-hm/) and has always wanted to play in the States. He sees his hotel management degree ambitions as an equally exciting and challenging foray into a new realm knowing that if he starts falling behind academically he won't be able to play. FNU's Athletics Department's mission supports the University's mission to enable the student-athlete to realize his/her full potential and prepare for lifelong success.

Wright played as a member of the Paul Henare and Paora Winitana Basketball Academy to Utah and Los Angeles for two years which gave him a sense that he could compete with Americans. He found the level of competition and friendly faces infectious as it was also in contrast to the environment in New Zealand.

In June of 2018, Wright received a basketball scholarship to attend Lee Academy in Maine, a top prep basketball school. Lee Academy enrolls players from Canada, Serbia, Russia, France, Turkey, and Lithuania as well. Academy mentors knew counterparts for things to fall into place for Wright's talent to spread by word of mouth.

At Florida National University, Wright will compete in the division one program in the National Association of Intercollegiate Association (NAIA). The NAIA div one is considered to be on par with NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) div two. The NAIA is a smaller association than the NCAA, with a little more than 60,000 students.

He will be under the coaching eye of James "JJ" Thatcher who is embarking on his sixth season and in 2017-2018 took the Conquistadors to a milestone 25-7 record, the most victories the varsity had posted in its history.

In the bigger picture, Wright wants to compete in the European League as the NBA might be too selective with it's extreme and cutthroat competitiveness.

The mission of the Florida National University Athletic Department is to provide assistance within an athletic structure that promotes the development of a well rounded education through structured sport and competition, to develop life skills of discipline, and to make the athletic program a durable source of pride for the student population, student-athletes, alumni, university, and community of FNU.

Check the FNU website for more information and the Conquistadors 2019-2020 schedule (https://www.fnu.edu/athletics/team/mens-basketball-2015-16/).
