Highlands Center Celebrated as "Other Hilltop"

WHEELING, W.Va. - Aug. 27, 2019 - PRLog -- West Liberty University marked the 10th anniversary of its Highlands Center on Saturday, Aug. 24 with a festive ceremony led by President Stephen Greiner who welcomed guests to the "other hilltop."

WLU's Highlands Center opened in 2009 in a new building constructed at the Highlands retail location, located seven miles east of Wheeling in Triadelphia, W.Va.

Dr. John McCullough, retired president emeritus, and former alumni director Larry Williams took the opportunity to outline the history of the center, which serves non-traditional students and the community in a special way.

In 2009, McCullough served as WLU's executive vice president and Williams was the alumni director.

"The Highlands Center came about due to the need to serve non-traditional students. At the time, West Liberty was holding adult education classes at various spots, everywhere from church basements to old schools, and when the Highlands retail park opened in 2004, we jumped at the chance to work with the Ohio County Commissioners to make this location a reality. We are grateful to the commissioners and to Ohio County Administrator Greg Stewart for working with us to construct this beautiful and convenient location that continues to serve learners of all ages daily," said McCullough.

Stewart and all current Ohio County Commissioners are WLU (https://westliberty.edu) alumni and include Tim McCormick who serves as president, Donald Nickerson and Randy Wharton.

At the time of the Highlands Center construction, West Virginia Circuit Court Judge David Sims also was a commissioner.

"We cannot thank them all enough for working with West Liberty and making our dream a reality," McCullough said.

Williams also spoke and explained how exciting it was to be a part of building the center from scratch.

"It was just empty land, a plot of ground when we started and it has grown and continues to grow," said Williams.

"The Highlands Center is a perfect example of what can happen when a college and a community works together," said Dr. Thomas Michaud who serves as dean of the School of Professional Studies.

The School of Professional studies offers accelerated degrees to working adults including the Regents Bachelor of Arts (RBA), the Bachelor of Applied Science and the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership and Administration (BLA) degree programs, popular accelerated degree programs offered at the Highlands and online, that serve working adults.

The master's program for professional educators also is housed at the Highlands campus and Dr. Cathy Monteroso, dean of the College of Education and Human Performance, took a moment to introduce the new director of that program, Dr. Nicole Ennis.

Other educational programming that takes place at the Highlands includes Community University, an outreach for lifelong learning (non-credit) that is open to those age 50 or older.
