NEWARK, N.J. - Aug. 26, 2019 - PRLog -- By 2020, it is estimated that more than 40% of new auto glass will include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (or ADAS) like Lane Departure Warning, Rain Sensors and even Traffic Sign Recognition features to name a few. These safety features can provide state of mind for today's drivers but also present added maintenance for drivers.

When replacing your windshield, these camera systems can be compromised and need to be re-calibrated in order to continue working properly.

Since every vehicle's features vary widely, the camera calibration can be a complex process. Due to the complicated nature of calibrating, it isn't uncommon to find that your auto glass repair companies are not offering this service. They will send you to a dealership to get the re-calibration done on your own. In the meantime, you can't rely on your ADAS features until re-calibration is completed.

Static and dynamic are the two types of calibration processes for windshield cameras. Different vehicle manufacturers require either a static or dynamic process, and some vehicles require both.

Static re-calibration requires a controlled environment in which a specific target image is mounted on a fixture in front of the vehicle during the calibration process. A technician sets up the target and the vehicle specs, and then the camera is connected and re-programmed. Test driving the vehicle afterwards may be required.
Dynamic re-calibration requires driving the vehicle at a set speed on well-marked roads. This can typically take up to one hour or more, depending on the make and model of the vehicle. Many auto insurance companies are obligated to repair your vehicle to its original condition and may cover the cost to re-calibrate. Check with your carrier to clarify your coverage before heading to your dealer to have the calibration done.

It is crucial that the ADAS cameras are aligned perfectly. A misaligned camera could jeopardize the functionality of the system and lead to dangerous driving accidents. Be sure to confirm with your auto glass company whether or not calibration is needed in your vehicle.
