Should you use cardboard boxes with handle holes or ordinary cartons when moving house?
Moving home is a difficult time for everybody involved, but the result at the end of the struggle is a brand new home, which you will love. It is worth the trouble in the end, but the challenges that you will face are enormous.
• Handle holes are designed to make quality house moving boxes easier to carry and lift, obviously. Is this necessarily true? In actual fact, it does not make them easier to carry at all. If boxes are heavy and you lift them from a hole in the box, then they can often split open and break. If you carry a heavy box from the bottom like a normal carton, then the chances of breakage are much slimmer. The only real benefit is when you are lifting boxes up from the ground. If you have handle holes that are mid way up the boxes, then you don't have to bend down as far, which can be slightly easier than if you have to lift the box completely from underneath. However, this theory is ruled out when you try to hand the boxes to somebody else in a removal lorry, because you will need to lift the box as high as possible and handle holes in the middle do not allow you to lift the boxes as high. • Handle holes in a box are effectively just holes in a box on the sides. As with all holes, this allows for things to fall out of the box while moving and it also allows for other things to enter the box e.g. dirt, water, damage.
• Personally, based on the facts given above, we recommend simply using ordinary carton boxes for moving, and to avoid handle holes.
