Hill Billy Gin comes home with 2 stars from world's top food and drink awards
Black Mountains Botanicals in Herefordshire entered the Great Taste Awards for the first time since launching in 2018. Judges said Hill Billy Gin and Hill Billy Red 'went down like silk' - two stars means 'Above and beyond delicious'

Judges described the gin made by Black Mountains Botanicals as 'expert gin' that 'goes down like silk'. They awarded Hill Billy Gin and Hill Billy Red with two stars each, which puts them in the category of 'Above and beyond delicious'. Less than 10 per cent of the 12,772 entries were awarded two stars at the Great Taste Awards announced in August 2019.
"We've brought an artisan gin produced in a handmade distillery in the Black Mountains of Herefordshire to the world's attention, and that makes us feel so proud," says Glyn Bufton who runs The Bridge Inn pub, B&B and camping site by the river in Michaelchurch Ecsley.
Engineer and distiller Lloyd Reed designed and built the two stills, which he named after his two favourite Black Mountains, Twmpa and Blorenge. He said: "The Great Taste Awards is judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates so we knew how important it was to produce quality. We had been developing the flavour for over a year before we started."
Reed, a mechanical engineer with a Masters in Science, took his family camping at the idyllic Bridge Inn in 2012 where he met owner Bufton. They returned for holidays and as Reed saw in the New Year with Bufton over a gin in 2018, the conversation turned to distilling. Hill Billy Gin contains apple juice from the Gwatkin Cider Company in Herefordshire plus home-grown rosemary, rose, heather and bay cut with natural mineral water from the Brecon Beacons, plus 12 botanicals. The pair's next spirit will be a Toffee Apple Liqueur launching later this year.
