LED lighting serves up savings at Padel tennis court in Essex
LED lighting supplier Earlsmann was recently approached by Prested Tennis Club in Essex, one of UKs largest padel clubs (also with 2 "real tennis" courts) to provide advice on new lighting for its Padel Tennis courts.
By: Prested Tennis Club
The club needed a reliable, effective solution tailored to the unique requirements of Padel.
Earlsmann – the expert in bespoke lighting for sports facilities
Earlsmann is gaining a reputation for expertise in lighting for racquet sports, following successful projects at several 'real tennis' and 'rackets' courts. These sports rely on excellent lighting to allow fast, entertaining and safe play. Earlsmann worked with the team at Prested Tennis Club to understand the requirements of Padel tennis.
Padel is a relatively new racket sport, invented in Mexico in 1969 and played extensively in Argentina and Spain. It is becoming popular throughout Europe and is growing fast in the UK. It is always played as doubles on an enclosed court 10 metres wide by 20 metres long. Scoring is the same as for lawn tennis and the balls are similar but lower pressure. The balls can be played off the walls of the court, and solid, plastic, stringless racquets are used.
Using Relux modelling to create effective lighting design
Prested has two indoor Padel tennis courts, and 2 outdoors, which were using metal halide lighting that was expensive to run and maintain – and was beginning to fail. As there are no real guidelines covering Padel tennis light level, Earlsmann agreed with Prested to follow the principles used for lawn tennis.
Earlsmann attended site to undertake a survey and subsequently used Relux software to model a design that provides over 300 lux and a high uniformity of 0.81, providing well-lit back corners to assist players in making difficult shots. The fittings include opal light shields, installed to control glare that could obstruct play.
The Upgrade to LED allowed Prested to enjoy energy savings from day one.
The installation was undertaken by Prested's in-house maintenance team. The new LED lighting is already generating significant savings in energy use and ongoing maintenance costs, due to the superior reliability and longevity of the LED technology. The better quality of the lighting and the reduction in glare has created a more enjoyable facility – supporting a rise in new membership sign-ups from players wanting to join the club's weekly mix-ins, cardio Padel classes, kids' groups and regular tournaments.
