PHOENIX - June 24, 2019 - PRLog -- {9} presents Taking Flight, a new series by Phoenix-based pyrographer Alexandra Bowers, opening First Friday, July 5th, 6-10 PM at {9} The Gallery, 1229 Grand Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. Through Taking Flight, Bowers has innovated a style blending classic draftsmanship, surgical pyrography and watercolor to produce a series of Arizona avifauna. The stoic renderings stand as metaphor for the freedom to alter one's course in life, the ability to observe life from a different perspective, and the courage to lift off and fly.

"In my eyes, birds have always represented the freedom to explore, move, and adapt. Their ability to fly and therefore see the world from a completely different perspective, is an aesthetic representation for how I view my current reality. Observing the world from above allows the bird to see the big picture. Often times I think we get stuck looking at life from a narrow perspective that can be debilitating or even create blocks from moving forward and evolving as people." – Alexandra Bowers. Twelve birds are represented in different phases of flight throughout the series, alongside works highlighting over 96 found feathers from bird species across the state of Arizona.

Alexandra Bowers received her BFA in 2012 from Arizona State University. Inspired by the natural surrounding environment, Bowers utilizes data collected while hiking to produce wood burned studies of plants and animals she finds along the way. Bowers has showcased her work throughout Arizona and in New England where she was hand selected to show at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. In 2017 her work was showcased in Sky Harbor International Airport's Museum Gallery and she was also one of three chosen for the "Summer Artist Residence Program: Biomimicry Challenge" at the Tempe Center for the Arts. In 2018, Contemporary Forum auctioned off Bowers' work to help raise funds for the Phoenix Art Museum's contemporary art collection. This year, she will be exhibiting at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in their group show, Flora and Fauna. As Bowers continues on her journey as an emerging artist, she continuously searches for opportunities within the arts community, including exhibiting both nationally and internationally.

Alexandra Bowers: Taking Flight runs through the month of July at {9} The Gallery.
