Barcelona Festival of Song®: 15th Anniversary

BARCELONA, Spain - June 21, 2019 - PRLog -- Next Thursday on July 4th, the Trial Hall of the Palau de la Música Catalana hosts Mar de cançons, an inaugural concert of the 15th Barcelona Festival of Song®. The 2019 Festival invites us to immerse ourselves in the Iberian and Latin America music and poetry.

The Barcelona Festival of Song celebrates fifteen years of tireless work to bring to light, preserve and spread internationally the chamber music in Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese. This repertoire is not normally a part of the curricula of universities and conservatories in the world, as most of the common curricula is still anchored in Eurocentric teaching models that correspond to nineteenth-century colonial structures.

The Barcelona Festival of Song is revolutionary because it seeks to break down structures that canonize Central European repertoires to the detriment of those produced outside that area. The music revolution Works to generate spaces and give voice to the creators of the Iberian and Latin American world. In the mid-nineteenth century these creators have built a rich repertoire that forms an identity by joining the two powerful languages of music and poetry.

The 2019 festival's theme is water, an origin of life, and a powerful metaphor for an event dedicated to creating bridges between the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. These bridges represent a  place for exchange, encounter and transformation. For fifteen years, lyrical singers, instrumentalists, composers and poets from 18 countries have been traveling seas, motivated by the desire to learn, and bring the songs into Catalan, Portuguese and Spanish cultures. The seas have taken the songs and have since shared them in distant lands.

Like every year, the festival has commissioned the composition of a new cycle of songs that are premiered at the inaugural concert. This year the cycle of songs are written by the US composer Nicolás Gutierrez (1993) who composed Signat, the friend of the choir, work that celebrates the friendship of Catalan poets Marius Sampere (1928-2018) and Carles Duarte (1959) whom we pay homage to. The cycle also incorporates electronic elements and has a central element in water. Throughout the concert, and as an exhibition, the photographs taken by Erika Arias, an artist whose work connects the song with the water, will be presented. The photographs portray the evoking of the nymphs and sirens who, with their singing, seduce, and transport to fantastic universes. The concert will be performed by the renowned performers, soprano Patricia Caicedo and pianist Nikos Stavlas.

Throughout the 10 days, the festival will present 7 concerts. The Afro-American song "Dream song", will be presented by US counterpart Darryl Taylor. The recital, "Souvenirs de mon pays", is dedicated to piano works by women composers and will be interpreted by the Greek Nikos Stavlas. Another Brazilian song in tribute to Heitor Vila-Lobos and Claudio Santoro, will be played by renowned Brazilian tenor Lenine Santos, following a guitar concert by the composer and Cuban-American performer José Lezcano. We will then finish with "The new" flamenco singing program performed by singer Alba Guerrero. In the two final concerts, dedicated to the song in Catalan, Spanish and Portuguese, lyrical singers from the United States and Australia will perform. This very interesting program invites us to immerse ourselves in music and poetry that will transform us, and create a newfound appreciation for the Iberian and Latin American art song. All the concerts are free.
