First Charge is the first book in the three-part series, published by Gnome on Pig Productions
The author, Amanda Steel, is based in Manchester. She was inspired to write the book by the lack of strong female role models and LGBT characters in YA fiction. The character, Meredith, is confident in her own sexuality. The aspects of her life she struggles with are; being a mermaid descendant, having to save the word and sometimes having to take lives in the process. She wants a normal life, complete with exams and school bullies, but that becomes less likely for her as the story progresses.
The blog, Anonymous Book Reviews stated "a LGBT main character was refreshing. She reflected good qualities that younger people could look up to."
Amanda Steel previously dabbled with self-publishing, while studying creative writing as part of her degree. Then she signed up for a Creative Writing MA, shortly before her series was taken on by Gnome on Pig Productions.
