First Cannabis Dispensary in Southern Oregon Celebrates Five Years in Business
Gold Hill based cannabis dispensary Breeze Botanicals celebrates five full years in business on June 9th, 2019
Breeze Botanicals began as an effort by co-founders Brie Malarkey and Jon Cunningham to provide safe access to medicinal herbs and plants—including cannabis—to those in need in Southern Oregon. After spending months searching for a suitable location for an OMMP cannabis dispensary and being turned away by municipalities and landlords alike, they settled on a location in Gold Hill, believing they had finally found a winning combination of a welcoming community and a willing landlord.
Some of the local residents of Gold Hill resisted, believing that a cannabis dispensary would bring unwelcome elements to their small community, and that the presence of these elements may lead to an increase in local crime, that real estate prices would plummet, and drugged driving would increase in the town.
After months of city council and community meetings Breeze Botanicals opened its doors on June 9th of 2014 to become the first OMMP medical cannabis dispensary in all of Southern Oregon. Shortly after Breeze Botanicals opened its doors, a grassroots recall effort began against the two-thirds of Gold Hill's city council who had voted to allow the dispensary to open.
The recall effort failed, and Breeze Botanicals in Gold Hill remained. By 2015, the attitude surrounding cannabis dispensaries began to shift, and Breeze Botanicals opened a second location in Ashland, Oregon. Both locations continued to offer safe access to medicinal herbs, including cannabis, and on October 1st, 2016 Breeze Botanicals in Gold Hill and Ashland became the first and second OLCC-licensed recreational cannabis dispensaries in the entire state of Oregon.
Breeze Botanicals will be celebrating five years in business at their Gold Hill location on Saturday, June 8th, 2019 between 12:00PM and 5:00PM. The event will feature store specials, swag giveaways, special guests such as Evolvd, Sunna Ra Acres, Indigo Gardens, Sun God Medicinals, Leafly, Figaro's Pizza, and more. Additionally, there will be a live glassblowing demonstration during the event. For more information, see the Facebook Event page here: https://www.facebook.com/
