COLOGNE, Germany - June 4, 2019 - PRLog -- #ANGACOM2019 -- As the industry gathers in Cologne, Germany for the Angacom 2019 conference, one of the major issues will revolve around how to seamlessly integrate and manage a diverse array of personal devices and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the connected home, according to Geert Matthys, Vice President of Product Management for Technicolor Connected Home.

Projections show that by 2021 the average home will have approximately 15 devices competing for both Wi-Fi and ultra-broadband access, presenting challenges -- and new opportunities -- for Network Service Providers (NSPs) to better engage with subscribers.

"NSPs are currently facing a challenge in providing a seamless customer experience. One of the key areas that NSPs must look at is ensuring that there is an ample radio path throughout the whole home," says Matthys.

Signal strength is critical to in home Wi-Fi connectivity as many of these new devices will move around to parts of the home that are not always well covered by traditional Wi-Fi antennas. A new generation of smart technologies will help NSPs establish a higher quality of uninterrupted service.

"The connectivity solution must have intelligence in order to provide the proper signal distribution and make choices based on prioritization of devices. Certain types of traffic -- such as live voice transmissions or gaming applications -- are extremely sensitive to latency. Any lag can have a negative effect on the end user's customer experience," explains Matthys.

Beyond the growing number of personal devices in the home, the rising number of IoT devices creates challenges that can be met with new managed security services offered by NSPs.

"IoT devices present the challenge of being open to malicious attacks. Many of these IoT don't contain security or have sufficient processors to power security software, so there is an opportunity for NSPs to provide additional security services through their gateways," says Matthys.

Looking ahead at these industry trends, Technicolor believes that in home Wi-Fi can play a constructive role in addressing these challenges:

Gateway and Extenders - depending on the size of the home, NSPs can utilize a distributed architecture consisting of a central gateway and one or two extenders. This architecture should take advantage of Wi-Fi 6 which is uniquely attuned to mobile access thanks to its BSS and OFDMA principles.

A Centralized Roaming Solution - the proper management of distribution and prioritization of multiple devices will require a centralized roaming solution. EasyMeshTM -- which is the Wi-Fi Alliance open standard for roaming architecture -- should make it possible to dramatically simplify the integration of roaming solutions.

Intelligent Diagnostic Tools - NSPs should leverage new, intelligent diagnostic tools to monitor the health of the Wi-Fi service and resolve issues when necessary.

Implemented together in an integrated manner, these three elements will support NSPs ability to successfully provide a seamless Wi-Fi experience throughout the entire home.

"That is why at Technicolor, we have developed Wi-Fi 6 gateways, extenders, and software solutions in close coordination with our Hero Program Partners. We have pre-integrated solutions that enable NSPs to deliver services that meet the constantly evolving needs of bandwidth-intensive subscriber demands," concludes Matthys.
