As routines change and family members are suddenly gone, it's only natural for your dog or cat to feel those separation anxiety nerves. Some pets may even begin to act out on these feelings and become disruptive or destructive (urinate, defecate, bark, howl, chew, dig or try to escape). Thankfully, there are things that you can do before the school year kicks-off to prepare your pet for the changes ahead and to beat those back-to-school blues. This can help to minimize anxiety and the troubles that come along with it!
Practice: A few weeks before the kids head back to school, begin getting your pet used to their absence. If possible, leave your pet home alone for increasingly longer periods of time in the days/weeks leading up to the start of school. Offer a treat or a special goodie, like a puzzle toy or bone, before you leave and then when you arrive home to help create a positive association.
New Routine: It's important to discuss your pet's new routine with the entire family (children included). Animals thrive on routine, so setting up a plan before the school year begins and then implementing it weeks prior is a smart way to ease your pet into the transition. The routine should include consistent feeding, walking and play times. Incorporating daily exercise activities like walking and playing is crucial for combating anxiety. Make this a priority!
Consider Company: Let's face it, life gets busy – especially during the school year! If you feel strapped for time, consider hiring a pet sitter or asking a friend or neighbor to stop by during the middle of the day to provide a walk or playtime. Also, remember that during the summer the house is full of sounds. It may be a good idea to play some classical music or put on a dog-friendly TV program. These background sounds can be soothing to your lonely pet!
Find Your Calm: Back-to-school is a hectic time of year and it can be stressful for us too! Pets feel our energy, so it's important to stay as calm as possible. Have everything prepared well in advance so you are not scurrying around at the last minute. Stay extra calm when leaving or arriving home. This will help prevent your pet from getting too wound up during those times.
Start the school year off on the right paw – cool, calm and collected!
Find Their Zen: Routine, daily exercise and classical music are great coping mechanisms for separation anxiety, but some pets need a little extra help finding their calm or Zen.
