Veterans Affairs' Light Electronic Action Framework Wins 2019 FedHealthIT Innovation Award

AbleVets is playing key role in advancing LEAF innovation and adoption across VA

CHANTILLY, Va. - May 22, 2019 - PRLog -- AbleVets LLC, a leading provider of advanced health IT solutions for government, proudly announces that Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Light Electronic Action Framework (LEAF) is a 2019 FedHealthIT Innovation Award winner. A panel of current and former federal and industry leaders from across the federal health IT sector made the selection.

LEAF is an open-source solution built by VA employee Michael Gao for VA. The application allows non-technical employees to easily reduce manual, multistep, labor-intensive efforts to their essential steps – or workflows – and then automate them. LEAF modernizations have saved an estimated $20 million to date and significantly increased agency efficiency and transparency. LEAF currently supports some 85 business processes and 40,000 monthly users.

LEAF continues to expand functionality and garner widespread user adoption under the leadership of Blake Henderson, Acting Director, VHA Diffusion of Excellence, with support from an AbleVets team led by LEAF Project Manager Zina Raye. In addition, a growing body of LEAF superusers are advancing LEAF's use through networking and collaboration, most recently at an annual LEAF user conference. This year's conference included a Shark Tank‒style competition where LEAF innovators pitched creative applications.

Henderson remarked, "LEAF is flipping the government modernization model by giving frontline employees the capability to modernize. They're the ones selecting the processes to update and automate. I call it crowdsourcing government modernization. I thank FedHealthIT and the selection committee for recognizing how innovative LEAF is and appreciating how a simple, inexpensive technology can achieve major results."

"Giving employees the power to effect change is contagious," added Raye. "We now have a critical mass of users who are driving major cost savings and efficiencies for VA. LEAF exemplifies the very essence of VA's innovation strategy to do more, better. We're enabling the workforce to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time with patients, which is the ultimate goal. I thank the selection committee and FedHealthIT for recognizing this technology's potential."

The 2019 FedHealthIT Innovation Awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 11th from 2:00-5:00 pm at the Washington Press Club, 529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor, Washington, DC.
