5 Tips to Save Your Beard from the Pool this Summer
Splashing around with the kids or doing laps for exercise are a great time, however, for us beardsmen this activity can lead to disaster. The salt and the chlorine can do serious damage to your beard and hair, and if you're not careful, you may wind up shaving off your mane just to alleviate the irritation.
In the spirit of saving your beard, we've brought you 5 tips for protecting your beard (and hair) at the pool this summer.
Soak It First
Hair does an excellent job of soaking up water when it is first exposed, but like a sponge, there is a limit to how much it will take up. Soaking your beard and hair before you enter the pool reduces the amount of minerals and chlorine your hair will take on while you're in there.
Don't Wash It Right Before You Swim
Washing your beard and hair can strip it of natural oils. These oils can actually help build a barrier around your hair to help it from taking on too much chemically treated water.
Apply Beard Oil Before You Go
That's right! Adding some beard oil to your beard and hair before you get into the pool can actually help to improve the protective barrier around the cuticle of your hair and keep the water out. Even more helpful is a beard balm or beard butter containing natural waxes that are also hydrophobic and will protect your beard.
Wash It Well After You Swim
Always make sure to thoroughly rinse your hair and beard after you exit the pool. Using a shampoo designed for removing chlorine from your hair, like Ultra Swim shampoo, can be quite helpful. Follow up with a conditioning treatment.
Apply More Beard Oil
Make sure to apply beard oil after you've towel dried your beard. This last step is critical after being in the pool and all the washing afterward. Don't skip it or a few hours later you will be so itchy and irritated, that your beard may not survive the night.
We hope these tips serve you well while you're cooling off by the pool this summer. Until next time.
