Wise was born and raised in Baltimore City. When she graduated from high school, Wise went on to college part time with the intent of becoming a nurse. She worked FT as an administrative assistant for FBI Headquarters in Washington DC. She knew early on that she didn't want to be behind a desk for the duration of her career and, on 9/11/2001, after finally making it home from one of the scariest days of her life, Wise knew it was time for a change. She resigned from the FBI one month after 9/11 and took a job as a CNA with a local emergency room – where she found herself interested in the work of the EMS professionals who brought in patients.
Wise obtained her EMT Certification from Baltimore City Community College and became an active member of Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Company where she obtained her EMT-Paramedic certification. A year after completing her Paramedic coursework, Wise was hired as an EMT with the Baltimore County Fire Department in 2003, where she spent nine years as a paramedic/firefighter and the last six years as an EMS Lieutenant. She was the 1st African American woman to achieve the rank of Lieutenant in the history of the department in 2012.
"I enjoyed the work, but I knew I was ready for a change. I decided that, with my background, my experience and my passion for working with seniors, Home Helpers would be a great fit for me and for this community. I want to be a resource people can call when they need help, whether it's a triggering event or a steadily rising need for assistance. I'm here to be an extension of your family to help make sure you're getting the care you need to live a happy, healthy life at home for as long as possible," Wise said.
Home Helpers offers free in-home consultations and works with each client to create a flexible, affordable care plan based on a person's individual needs. Services offered include care such as grooming, bathing, ambulation, medication management and care management as well as respite care, meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, companionship and transportation. Home Helpers specializes in helping families care for their loved ones so they can focus on spending quality time together.
During her time as a Paramedic, Wise found herself walking dogs, doing small chores and preparing meals for those who had activated 911 but did not necessarily need emergency care. There were many situations where due to the lack of resources and help in the home, as a first responder, she didn't always have the resources to help resulting in having to transport a person to the hospital to remove them from a vulnerable environment. It was heartbreaking because many of the seniors she transported didn't think they'd be coming back home.
"Being a first responder helped me see the challenging situations that seniors and people with other health challenges deal with in their private homes all while trying to maintain their independence and a normal life. We often had to transport people who, at the time, were considered vulnerable adults, but who I was sure could live on their own with just a little support. These were some of my worse calls because many people, especially seniors, feel like once they leave their homes, they won't be able to return. I'm looking forward to being able to provide the kinds of services that will help them go home and stay there safely and comfortably,"
