Elgin Country Club U.S. Women's Open Qualifier
Monday, May 6th, 2019
Congratulations to Elgin Country Club Honorary Junior member, Megan Furtney, on qualifying for the 74th U.S. Women's Open, to be held May 29th through June 2nd in Charleston, South Carolina. Furtney finished in second place with a 36 hole total of three over par 147, behind only the winner (and also qualifier) Wichanee Meechai total of 144. Only the top two spots earn a spot to advance to the U.S. Women's Open.
The day was filled with a lot of changing weather conditions and challenging golf action. After Meechai posted an afternoon round of 69 to boost her to top of the leaderboard, Furtney fell into a tie for third position, posting her afternoon round of 74 around 5:00 p.m. With word buzzing around the golf course that Round One leader Kailie Vongsaga was four over par, the only player left in the tournament who could potential contend for the second spot ahead of Furtney was Liz Kim. Kim, in the final pairing of the afternoon, shot a three over par morning round, and was in a tie with Furtney for the final spot, with Kim's afternoon score still to post.
When Kim reached the scoring area shortly after 6:30 p.m. and posted an afternoon score of 81, it became official. The second spot to play in the U.S. Women's Open belonged to Megan Furtney. After the long, intense and emotional wait of almost an hour and 30 minutes after Furtney posted her afternoon round, the emotion could no longer be contained. Furtney's family and friends began sharing this memorable moment together with pictures and jubilant embraces for the qualifier.
55 players competed for two spots to play and two alternates in the 74th U.S. Women's Open over 36 holes. Sarah Hoffman ended up besting Kailie Vongsaga in a two hole playoff for the first alternate spot. This was the second year in a row Elgin Country Club has hosted the qualifying event officiated by the CDGA, as partner with the USGA. Complete final results, including hole-by-hole scoring for all players, can be found at www.cdga.org, under tournament results.
All the Members and staff at Elgin Country Club are very proud to have Megan Furtney as an Honorary Junior Member at Elgin Country Club, and wish her the best of luck over the next three weeks as she prepares to take on the world's best at the 74th U.S. Women's Open!
Great job Megan!
