LAS VEGAS - May 9, 2019 - PRLog -- Rose McKinney-James, Managing Principal of Energy Works LLC. and McKinney-James Associates in Nevada, is one of five trailblazing businesswomen who have collaborated and shared their stories in the recently released book "The Energy Within Us," a powerful perspective of how these determined businesswomen busted through the glass ceiling of corporate America dominated by predominantly white male executives.

Hardcover, paperback and ebook versions of the Atkins & Greenspan Publishing Company's books are currently available at online stores. The women recently released their book at the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) national conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Book sales will fund scholarships for African American female students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

McKinney-James and her co-authors wrote their own stories, chronicling how as children they had few role models of black female executives, but rose through with education, integrity and hard work to blaze new trails in the energy industry.

"I am so honored to have been encouraged to tell my story in this wonderful book," McKinney-James said. "It was at times a really hard road to travel, but I was determined to never give up. I hope my personal experiences becoming a small business owner and clean energy advocate for Nevada, as well as compelling stories of my co-authors, will inspire other young women dreaming of becoming corporate leaders or owners of their own businesses someday."

McKinney-James is an experienced and seasoned small business leader, a pioneering clean- energy advocate and independent corporate director with an extensive history in public service, nonprofit volunteerism and private-sector corporate social responsibility.

The former president and CEO of the Corporation for Solar Technology and Renewable Resources and former commissioner with the Nevada Public Service Commission, McKinney-James also served as Nevada's first director of the Department of Business and Industry. She also served as a member of the Obama-Biden Transition Team with responsibility for the U.S. Department of Energy and the team lead for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

McKinney-James serves on the boards of the Energy Foundation and Net Impact, MGM Resorts International and Toyota's Financial Savings Bank. She is former Board Chair for the American Association for Blacks in Energy. In 2013, she was selected to serve as the Inaugural Ambassador for the C3E initiative supporting increased participation by women in the clean-energy sector.

The national nonprofit DirectWomen recently announced that McKinney-James is the 2019 recipient of the Sandra Day O'Connor Board Excellence Award, which is awarded to women who served with distinction on the board of a public company and advanced the value of diversity in the workplace. McKinney-James will be honored at a luncheon on Oct. 4 in New York City.

DirectWomen's mission is to increase the representation of women lawyers on corporate boards. McKinney-James, a native of Detroit, Michigan, is a graduate of Olivet College and the Antioch School of Law in Washington, D.C.
