May 7, 2019 - PRLog -- A switch is the core of the network and must accordingly do justice to the requirements of performance, data protection, failure safety and robustness vis-à-vis ambient influences. Bandwidth and flexibility for communication are further important factors for the selection of switches for industrial application. The new gigabit switch IGS-9822DGP with 12 Ethernet interfaces (of which 4 are SFP ports) is precisely tailored to meet these high requirements.

The IGS-9822DGP has a total of 12 Ethernet connections of which 8 are executed as RJ45 sockets and are specified as 10/100/1000Base-T(X) with Auto-MDI/MDIX. Respectively, 2 further connections are integrated as SFP ports (Small Form Factor Pluggable) and specified as 100/1G/2.5GBase-X and 1G/10GBase-X. SFP ports enable the connection of hot plug capable I/O devices, thus providing high flexibility, for example for extending the network. SFP modules can be inserted into the corresponding switch ducts during operation (hot-swappable, hot-pluggable). A range of applications is available for them, with which flexible and cost-efficient solutions, for example for enterprise networks, data centres or industrial image processing can be established. Even if SFP is not an industrial standard, SFP modules from various manufacturers are normally compatible with each other and can be used with the switch.

One focus of the IGS-9822DGP is its equipping with important safety features. Two power connections with overload protection guarantee an uninterruptible power supply, thus increasing the availability of the network. The large permissible operating temperature range from -40 to +75 °C also provides high operational safety. For networks based on ring topology, the switch offers an own highly efficient technology for fast network recovery (< 30 ms) in case of failure with the open ring. The interfaces can be individually switched on and off. At the software level, SNMPv3, RADIUS/TACACS+, HTTPS/SSH/SSL, VLAN (802.1Q) and others as well as port-based access control (802.1x) and DOS/DDOS Auto-prevention are supported.

The implemented switching process "Store and forward" ensures that data packages received are initially saved in a buffer. Each data package is checked and processed in this buffer before being forwarded to its target address. The advantage is that faulty data packages are sorted out in advance. Further features such as Auto-negotiation, Auto-MDI/MDI-X and Data Flow Management round off the range of services. With Auto-negotiation, Ethernet devices exchange information such as the transfer rates and pause capabilities via their duplex mode, thus enabling them to establish a network connection with optimum performance. Jumbo frames up to 10 kilobytes are also supported. IP-based bandwidth management ensures additional optimisation of the data flows. The IGS-9822DGP supports IEEE 1588v2, the protocol for precise time synchronisation (PTP, Precision Time Protocol). This protocol enables system-wide synchronisation on a reference clock (PTP Grandmaster Clock) with precision up to the sub-microsecond area.

Comfortable administration of components plays an important role for a large number of components in establishing a monitoring network and for its later servicing. The manufacturer ORing offers high-performance management software for this purpose. Using "Open Vision", the installers can identify, configure and monitor the network components. Additionally, the software can also discover unusual events and portray them graphically. One of the highlights is the link to Google Maps for the projection of network topology and device locations on current maps and city maps, for example for traffic monitoring tasks.

The robust IGS-9822DGP housing is designed for both top-hat rails and for wall assembly. With a mere 984 g weight and the dimensions 75 x 125 x 154 mm, the switch here is highly compact.
