NEW YORK - May 3, 2019 - PRLog -- MENTAL STATES is a feature documentary exploring a troubling and systemic vacuum which exists between the healthcare system, the justice system, and the rights of individuals dealing with mental health issue in America.

"What we do today is we take that person who would have been brought to a psychiatric hospital years ago and treated them, or at least kept safe, and instead, we bring that person before a judge, and we bring that person before a jury, and we put that person in jail," shares Mary Beth Pfeiffer, multi-award winning author of "Crazy in America".

"We are thrilled the Manhattan Film Festival has chosen this film. It is of course first and foremost a New York story, but more importantly Mental States characterizes how we as a society through our institutions,  are failing some of our citizens, stripping them of some very fundamental rights. We can do better," says Dan Shannon, the film's producer/director of photography.

Largely set  in New York City, Mental States tells the story of a young musician dealing with bipolar illness who suffers a psychotic episode while in a voluntary day clinic, highlighting the inherent systemic challenges for both the application of healthcare and/or justice on the one hand, and on the other, the extraordinary hurdles facing mental illness sufferers and their families in North America.

Captured with a sensitive and poetic lens, the film highlights the issues surrounding mental illness. Prominent figures such as Mark Vonnegut, M.D., author and son of famous Kurt Vonnegut, (Slaughter House Five) and Mary Beth Pfeiffer, offering contrasting yet hopeful perspective on mental illness, across our justice and healthcare systems.

"No one wants to discuss mental illness today, not in the workplace, not in school and certainly not socially. The goal we set for ourselves in telling this story is to empower others who may be dealing with these issues, to realize they are not alone. The individuals who tell their stories in this film have shared a roadmap for all of us," says Isabelle Depelteau, the film's director.

The film was produced with the financial participation of YESTV Canada, Canada Media Fund, Québec Film Tax Credits, Canada Tax Credits.

The film is at the Manhattan Film Festival, Saturday May 4, 7PM
