The Grand Opening of Ai+ Gallery
By: Ai+ Gallery
The theme of the opening exhibition is Sense & Sensibility, in which many great works of established artists and local art students will be on display. Each artwork poses an expression or situation that may be interpreted in many different ways, by each viewer. The goal of this exhibition is to allow viewers to take a step back and appreciate and respond to the complexities, both emotionally and aesthetically, presented within the artworks themselves. As art becomes more and more accessible to the modern world, it is easy for one to take a brief glance at a piece, see what it is for its realities, and move on. Sense & Sensibility challenges this notion by putting a viewer in a position to stop, ponder and ask questions about what an artwork may be trying to say.
Ai Weiwei, a world-known contemporary artist, will be welcoming guests to the gallery through a video, and by having one of his many documentaries, Fairytale, playing at the exhibition.
Dr. Frances H. Arnold, a chemistry professor at Caltech who has just recently received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018, will be displaying a few art prints from her research and work alongside Ai Weiwei's art. The unique placement of these pieces will allow viewers to contemplate the relationship between the two artists' works.
Additionally, Jim Barry, the Art Director of Drawing, Painting and Silkscreen at Caltech, as well as several great Pasadena art students will be having their works on display.
