College and school campus and district administrators, mental health counselors, emergency managers and public safety and security professionals know how critical it is to plan and prepare for all types of emergencies on their campuses. It's also important for students, faculty, staff and first responders to recover and heal from these incidents. Now more than ever, it's not just one person's or one team's job to ensure safety and security. It is imperative that law enforcement, administrators, faculty, students, parents, technology professionals and our communities collaborate and cooperate. That's why "Making Campuses Safer – TOGETHER" is this year's Campus Safety Conference (CSC) theme.

Campus Safety magazine is once again presenting three CSCs this summer, and Las Vegas will host the first event (CSC West) at the M Resort and Spa, June 17-19. Together with our advisory board and partners, we have put together educational sessions, networking events and sponsor showcases that are packed with the vital information higher ed and K-12 communities need to protect their campuses.

Las Vegas Department of Public Safety Chief Michele Freeman will deliver the opening keynote, discussing resilience and recovery following tragic incidents. This keynote is sponsored by Blackboard Transact and will be followed by a general session on emergency preparedness and collaboration.

The Campus Safety Director of the Year finalists and winners will also be honored at CSC West. You don't want to miss this opportunity to see what an amazing job these protection professionals are doing for their organizations.

Additionally, CSC West will feature Molly Hudgens of Sycamore Middle School in Tennessee, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor Citizen recipient for a Single Act of Heroism for preventing a possible active shooter tragedy. In 2016, she convinced an upset student who reportedly had a list of teachers and police officers he was going to shoot to hand over his gun.

Safety goes beyond our campuses and impacts different areas, including transportation safety. Cheryl Spittler with Class Act Consulting will provide strategies and tools you can implement with your bus drivers to maintain control, build healthy relationships and understand how to identify behavioral issues.

You also won't want to miss our pre-conference workshop on NFPA 3000 and PASS guidelines. This comprehensive workshop will help you create more effective plans and avoid common technology and design pitfalls. Plus, the Police Foundation will discuss findings from the Broward County (Fla.) Communications Report.

The always popular Lt. John Weinstein with Northern Virginia Community College will discuss how to plan safe and secure events, as well as how to identify priorities and communicate public safety objectives to senior decision makers.

Additionally, Gary Sigrist of Safeguard Risk Solutions will help attendees identify ways to improve their prevention plans and training.

Other topics include:

• How to conduct a realistic tabletop exercise with your team
• Trauma toolkits that help communities prepare and respond to victims
• How to be more effective leaders
• How Saddleback College implemented access control for its comprehensive violence prevention program
• How to build relationships with the media and answer their challenging questions
• Plus much more.

In addition to all of these educational sessions, there will be networking opportunities and a sponsor showcase featuring the latest products and services universities and schools can adopt to address their biggest safety, security and emergency management issues.
