Youngstown Diocese takes innovative classroom approach with Poetry Rocks Schools

Powerful new teaching tool inspires creative thinking and improves literacy through music for middle and high school students.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - April 23, 2019 - PRLog -- Poetry Rocks Schools, an Ohio-based educational digital resource provider, will be introducing their new program in collaboration with Superintendent Mary Fiala and English Teacher Joy Huber at Cardinal Mooney High School on Tuesday, April 30th, from 9:50-11:20 AM.

This novel approach utilizes unique "poetry songs" —written with students' tastes in mind—to engage and intensify student creative involvement, by merging poetry and other text with a more familiar medium – today's music.

The Press Day will begin with an introduction by Joy Huber about how she uses Poetry Rocks Schools, followed by a demonstration of the digital resource in a classroom setting. The demo will feature classroom exercises, streamed content, and various prompts to inspire student interaction, streamed from the company's website: www.poetryrocksschools.com.

The Diocese of Youngstown has purchased an annual subscription to Poetry Rocks Schools for all of its nineteen middle and high schools. Lori Crofford, Director of Instructional Technology and Professional Development for Diocese of Youngstown Schools stated, "Poetry Rocks Schools has created something very powerful."

Permissions have been granted by all participants—for video, photo and interview opportunities—during the Press Day. WFMJ, WKBN, WYTV, The Youngstown Vindicator, and Warren Tribune Chronicle are invited to attend.

ABOUT POETRY ROCKS SCHOOLS:

Poetry Rocks Schools is the brainchild of Youngstown native and New Yorker Larry Lozier. Lozier explains, "We turn classic and modern poetry into lyrics; which are then integrated into original songs. Our standards-based lesson plan guides and music videos make it easy for teachers to engage and inspire their students, with all relevant background materials and prompts provided"

Interactive tools—integrated into our lesson guides—inspire students to get creatively involved. Using "music as the messenger," students experience cross-curricular associations and deeper appreciation of the poems while meeting common core standards. With lyrics rooted in English/Language Arts, the company's poetry songs create learning opportunities across all disciplines.

Students learn poetry through the familiar medium of contemporary music via a wide variety of styles—such as Pop, R&B, Dance/Hip Hop, Reggae and Rock. Poetry Rocks Schools currently includes songs based on poetry by Blake, Frost, Shakespeare, Twain, Eliot, Hughes and Angelou, among many others.  A free trial is available for schools and parents via the web or mobile.
