Advantages & Disadvantages of Dental Implants
NEWMARKET, Ontario - April 17, 2019 - PRLog -- A dental implant is one of the most commonly used forms of the dental prosthesis to replace missing teeth. Not only are they the most aesthetically pleasing among all tooth replacements, but they also are the easiest to maintain and care for. Even though they are widely used, there are both positive and negative points to consider when a dental implant is suggested as part of an oral treatment plan. Here is Newmarket Dentist's list of some of the advantages and disadvantages of dental implants.

Advantages

Stronger Teeth
: Dental implants currently are the strongest prosthesis used in dental treatments today. They are so strong that they can be used in posterior and anterior teeth.

Aesthetics: Dental implants allow patients to have a prosthesis that looks almost exactly like their own natural tooth. Since implants are embedded into the bone, it can mimic the same look and function as a natural tooth root that is attached at the gums. They are equally useable as molars or incisors due to their strength.

Bone Preserver: By using a dental implant, the dentist is able to preserve the alveolar bone. The implant will become part of the bone through osseointegration which will prevent bone loss and arch loss.

Longevity: Due to their strength, implants naturally last a much longer time than other options would in the body. Adults or young adults who have lost teeth can benefit from long term prosthesis with a dental implant. So long as there is proper alveolar bone support, dental implants and prosthesis can last many years.

Disadvantages

Although there are significant benefits to dental implants they are not suited for every case. For some, there may be significant disadvantages that need to be considered before moving forward with such an invasive, time consuming, and costly procedure. Here are a few of the considerations you should make before committing to a decision.

High Cost: Dental implants tend to be more costly than other tooth replacement options currently in use in the dental field. The cost is based on the quality of the materials used, the aesthetics that those materials provide, and the procedures used to create the near-perfect look.

Not For Everyone: Dental implants can be used on most patients, but they are not advised for use in those who are medically compromised.  People who have diabetes or hypertension that is not controlled, certain cardiovascular conditions and respiratory diseases are not good candidates. Always consult with your dental provider before making your final decision; they are the ones who will know your candidacy best.

Complex Treatment: The procedure itself is highly complex when compared with tooth replacement options that have been around for much longer. Not only do implants require a special set of dental skills, but they also take several visits to install and complete.

Limitations: In order to use an implant, the patient must have enough alveolar bone height to support the implant. In many cases, patients who have lost teeth may not have enough bone to support the implant and prosthesis.

Patient Follow Up: As with any dental procedure, it's important for the patient to maintain their oral care in order to ensure that the treatment is successful. That means regular appointments with the dentist, proper oral hygiene, and the halting of nicotine or other smoking habits.
