Carl B. Phillips Honors Aretha Franklin with Gospel Tribute during the 2019 Detroit Music Awards
Detroit Music Award Gospel Nominee will perform selections from Aretha's classic gospel albums
Carl, who grew up listening to Aretha Franklin's music in his parent's home, recalls his introduction to gospel music through Aretha's "Amazing Grace" album. "The first time I saw the album "Amazing Grace" in the stores, I wondered who was Grace and why was she Amazing, not knowing this was a gospel album. But once I began singing in church choirs and learning gospel music, my love for "Amazing Grace" changed. I used the album to practice being a choir director and also work on my church shout".
For the tribute, Carl hand-selected several of Detroit's gospel female vocalists, including Sherrie Nunn-Berry, Nikki Harris, Kimberly Whitsett, and Renita Donaldson along with an ensemble of Detroit's top gospel musicians and singers to perform selections from both of Aretha's gospel albums.
This year's Detroit Music Awards takes on a special meaning for Carl, not only is he leading the Aretha Franklin Gospel Tribute, Carl has four nominations in the Gospel / Christian category. Carl is nominated in the categories of Outstanding Gospel / Christian Artist, Outstanding Gospel / Christian Songwriter, Outstanding Gospel / Christian Vocalist and Outstanding Gospel / Christian Recording.
