-- 'The Adventures of Horatio Mowzl Volume Two: First Purlings' is a magical new children's story written by the ecologist and author Paul Thornycroft which was recently published on 1st April 2019.
This book, the second in the Mowzl Trilogy, is an exciting tale of adventure, mystery and discovery. Vanishing from home, Mowzl and Scraggy find themselves in the Ocean world and after many narrow escapes, Mowzl is pulled through fog into the human world while Scraggy is lost in enchanted sleep on the Island of Mist. Mowzl befriends children who learn from him how to 'purl', –– dream into Mowzl-sized pouches they've made for themselves, ––whereupon they can fly. Purling is difficult to get the hang of, but when they do, they purl in the Glade, talking the wild talk with creatures of all kinds. The children's eyes and hearts are opened; they see the wild web –– alive and aware –– as something they are intimately part of, and they feel the damage to Nature that humans are causing, as a wounding to themselves. Inspired, they resolve to act urgently to transform the way grown-up's see Nature.
Paul Thornycroft wrote this book after witnessing 70 years of accelerating degradation of nature, with climate breakdown and ecosystem collapse occurring at global scale. This is the '6th mass extinction', threatening the future of all life forms on Earth, including humans. The Mowzl books aim to inspire children who must navigate the chaos that escalates around us due to the inaction of those in power; it is the children who are making the leap that is needed to trigger change on a meaningful scale and in so doing, awaken the rest of us.
