El Paso Animal Services Sets Lifesaving Record

The Department Stands Out From Other Texas Shelters That Have Much Work To Do

EL PASO, Texas - April 9, 2019 - PRLog -- El Paso Animal Services announced Wednesday that they achieved their highest monthly save-rate in department history in March. Milestones like this are big news for Texas, the state with the highest number of pets killed in shelters. American Pets Alive! is working with hundred of shelters around the country to address this urgent problem and to put an end to unnecessary deaths of cats and dogs in shelters.

El Paso Animal Services saved 92.5% of the more than 2,400 animals that entered the Animal Services Center in March. American Pets Alive! helped El Paso shelter leadership expand their foster program, increase lifesaving for sick and injured pets, and implement proactive adoption policies, among other improvements made. These efforts have resulted in the shelter operating at a higher capacity and saving more lives than ever before.

"El Paso Animal Services has worked diligently to learn new methods of lifesaving and implement key changes at the shelter. The hard work is paying off, and we are seeing increased lives saved in El Paso. Some of the key factors making this improvement possible have been strong leadership in making these changes happen and increased community engagement," said Faith Wright, shelter management advisor for American Pets Alive!.

This is the fourth consecutive month El Paso Animal Services has achieved a 90% or higher live-release rate as they continue their  journey to make El Paso a No Kill community.

"Animal Services would like to thank the community for their continued support, and encourage everyone to be involved in the City of El Paso's mission to become a No Kill Community,"said Animal Services Director Paula Powell.. "To support this mission, the community can help by adopting, fostering, volunteering, and donating, as well as ensuring all owned pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations, have a microchip and are spayed or neutered."

Officials added that the spring and summer months are the most challenging, with an increase in the number of animals entering the shelter.  El Paso Animal Services Center has an even greater need for the community's help during this time.
