NEWMARKET, Ontario - April 5, 2019 - PRLog -- After partaking in several tooth decay preventive measures, the dentist sometimes succeeds in discovering one or two cavities. In the beginning, most people don't feel any pain so they may delay the treatment and some think that tooth decay will repair itself. These are the biggest mistakes people make because once a tooth starts decaying it will not repair on its own. The problem which began as small will soon enough become a big problem.

How Does Tooth Decay Start?

The human mouth is a dynamically stable ecosystem, where both helpful and harmful bacteria are constantly interacting. When certain sugars are present, the harmful (pathogenic) bacteria create acids. This will lead to teeth starting to lose minerals and starting to break down.

Even an excessive acidic diet can trigger the demineralization of teeth. When the conditions are favorable, the damages by pathogens are undone by healing mechanisms of the human body, which includes healthy saliva.

Cavities - The Sign of Tooth Decay

A tiny hole which develops on the tooth when it starts decaying is known as the cavity. The plaque contains harmful bacteria which stick to human teeth. This bacteria will release acid that can cause cavities on teeth. When cavities are not treated on time, they grow and cause major damage to the tooth. Studies show that around 28 percent of adults live with an untreated cavity.

Treatment of Tooth Decay

If only a small part of enamel is eroded and dentin is not affected, the doctor might suggest special kinds of toothpaste, mouth rinses, or fluoride, phosphate and calcium-containing filling materials. However, if the decay reaches dentin, it cannot be turned back. The small cavity is often repaired with an amalgam filling or a resin material having a color similar to the tooth. If the structure of the tooth is lost, then the dentist might require putting on a crown, which will strengthen and restore the function and shape of a tooth.

The worst case is when an abscess is formed in the tooth, and in such cases the options for treatment are very minimal. People either go for an extraction or a root canal treatment. When no chances of treatment are left then dentists will do the extraction.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay?

For decay prevention, the aim should be to keep the balance favoring beneficial processes. Good habits such as brushing the teeth daily, flossing, getting proper fluoride, and a limited acidic diet proves to be helpful in preventing the tooth from decaying. There are some individuals who after following these preventive measures need extra guidance and help.
