UltraFlex customer brazing brass studs with induction heating, achieving a fast, clean, safe process

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. - April 5, 2019 - PRLog -- UltraFlex - a leading manufacturer of advanced, digitally controlled induction heaters - has showcased yet another application of induction heating for manufacturing purposes.

An UltraFlex customer - manufacturer of coils for the induction heating industry - required an optimization of the brazing process for brass studs having a diameter of 25 mm and height of 20 mm. The studs had to be brazed to copper, without melting the previous, already-brazed stud. In addition, the induction brazing had to allow the technician to position the stud in an easy and convenient way.

UltraFlex considered their SmartPower™ Compac Systems with two modules as being most appropriate for this induction brazing process. SmartPower™ Compac Systems are a breakthrough innovation in the induction heating technology, featuring the Direct Digital Step™ control algorithm and a unique configurable modular approach. UltraFlex also came up with a specifically designed induction coil to achieve the result required by their customer.

To accomplish the brazing process, the copper turn was first heated close to the required temperature before the technician would manually position the brass stud with the brazing ring at the designated centre. Then, during the process of induction brazing, at power output of 33 kW, the induction coil is moving at a speed of 58 mm per minute, successfully brazing the stud without melting the previous stud. If the power is increased, the speed of moving is adjusted accordingly.

Following the replacement of torch heating with induction heating in this brazing process, the customer achieved a fast, clean and safe brazing process. The precise control of temperature and time guaranteed repeatability, resulting in a consistent heating result every time.
