Alten Construction begins work on Albany High School addition

ALBANY, Calif. - April 2, 2019 - PRLog -- Alten Construction, a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, recently began construction on an addition to Albany High School.

The Albany High School addition is a design-build, and Alten Construction has been involved with the project since early 2018. With a design-build delivery method project, the designer and the contractor work together as a team from the beginning, providing joint project recommendations. In addition to saving time and money, design-build projects allow for additional innovation and collaboration.

Alten Construction has been working alongside LCA Architects on the $7.6 million project. Together, the two companies came up with the design for the addition and will continue to work together throughout the construction process.

"We're noticing that the design-build delivery method is becoming more common in schools and public works projects," said Chris Murphy, a project manager for Alten Construction. "Alten Construction is excited and enthusiastic to complete our first design-build with LCA Architects, who we have a successful past with on more traditional delivery methods."

The design-build project is expected to take 11 months to complete. The addition, which is located in the middle of the high school, comprises of a pair of two-story buildings: a classroom building and an administration building with a multipurpose space. A breezeway and a second-floor balcony will connect the two buildings, which total 10,231 square feet.

In addition to the two buildings, Alten Construction also will be completing site work around the addition, including landscaping, site concrete and pavers. Since the space for the project was previously used as a gathering area as opposed to an existing building, students and staff will be able to utilize all of the school's existing buildings without having to relocate.

"This project is less than 10 miles away from our headquarters in Richmond," said Murphy. "Our team takes pride in knowing that we can help modernize and enhance a public high school right in our local community."

The Albany High School addition is a Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) project, which is similar to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. CHPS recognized schools are designed to improve student performance and the educational experience by creating sustainable, cost-effective schools with high-quality learning environments.
