PALM COAST, Fla. - March 26, 2019 - PRLog -- The Women United Flagler board of directors is pleased to announce that the group is celebrating 10 years serving the community. The chapter was launched in 2009 by a group of local women concerned with the welfare of women and children in need in Flagler County.

"We have over 50 active members who give, advocate and volunteer," said Women United Flagler Chapter President Linda Mahran. "The funds raised through Women United go to help women and children above and beyond the normal activities of the United Way with 80% allocated by Women's United and 20% going to the United Way Community Fund," Mahran added.

The group's mission is to create positive, measurable, long-term change in the lives of women and children by focusing on root causes and pooling resources to increase impact. They are most well known in the community for their 'Chicks with Cans' program initiative. "You've probably seen our 'chicks' standing outside Publix Supermarket's collecting food and monetary donation for local food pantries," said Maureen Walsh, Community Engagement Chair for the group. "Our food drives are held twice a year; in the spring to focus on restocking local food pantries for the summer when school is out of session, and in the Fall to help Team Feed Flagler (which we have remained 1st place winners since it began in 2010!), she added. With the help of over 40 volunteers and Publix Supermarkets, the women were able to bring in and donate over $15,428 worth of food in 2018.

All monetary donations are used to purchase food through Second Harvest Food Bank. It is estimated the group has collected approximately 60,000 lbs (30 tons) of food since it's inception.

In 2018, the group distributed $34,182 in food and grants to local agencies, such as; the Family Life Center, Family Promise, Samaritan Ministries, Early Learning Coalition, Reading Pals, The Flagler Education Foundation, Teens-In-Flight, Children's Home Society, Christmas Come True, Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Early Learning Coalition of Flagler-Volusia, Feed Flagler, Sally's Safe Haven, as well as provided high school scholarships to both Flagler Palm Coast High School and Matanzas High School students.

Women United Flagler Chapter's signature event is The Power of the Purse, selling out almost every year. The group also teams up annually with AdventHealth Palm Coast for the annual Pink Army 5K Run and Pet Friendly 1-mile Walk, where a portion of the proceeds go back to Women United Flagler.

Every year at the Power of the Purse event, one woman is chosen for their dedication and hard work within the group, as well as with organizations outside of Women United Flagler. With the award comes a $500 donation to her charity of choice. Past recipients include; Linda Mahran – 2009, Sandra Mullen-Vecchi – 2010, Cindy Dalecki – 2011, Donna Murray – 2012, Jamie Brown – 2013, Linda Sanders – 2014, Linda Mahran – 2015, Maureen Walsh – 2016 and Joanne Tavzel – 2017. A 2018 recipient will be announced at the Power of the Purse event scheduled for August 26th, 2019. This year's event is themed A Night on Broadway.
