| MEDIA ADVISORY: 2019 Military Ball in NYCAn American tradition dating back to the 19th century, this year's Military Ball will feature a special tribute to the late Dean Emeritus of the Columbia University School of General Studies, Peter J. Awn. During his 20-year tenure, Awn built an unmatched legacy recruiting and supporting veterans at the School, which today enrolls more than 500 veterans pursuing a traditional Ivy League undergraduate degree. A final roll call ceremony will be performed by past and current members of the U.S. Military Veterans of Columbia University (MilVets), representing the decades of commitment and support from Awn to the military. MilVets was formed in 2002 by a group of students at the School of General Studies (GS) in order to foster camaraderie and networking among veterans across the University, joining a long tradition of veteran scholars at Columbia that dates back to the end of World War II and the creation of GS.
