MANHATTAN, N.Y. - March 26, 2019 - PRLog -- Hundreds of veterans, leaders, scholars, and guests will convene this Friday to celebrate Columbia University's distinguished student veteran community at the 9th Annual Military Ball on Friday, March 29.

An American tradition dating back to the 19th century, this year's Military Ball will feature a special tribute to the late Dean Emeritus of the Columbia University School of General Studies, Peter J. Awn. During his 20-year tenure, Awn built an unmatched legacy recruiting and supporting veterans at the School, which today enrolls more than 500 veterans pursuing a traditional Ivy League undergraduate degree.

A final roll call ceremony will be performed by past and current members of the U.S. Military Veterans of Columbia University (MilVets), representing the decades of commitment and support from Awn to the military. MilVets was formed in 2002 by a group of students at the School of General Studies (GS) in order to foster camaraderie and networking among veterans across the University, joining a long tradition of veteran scholars at Columbia that dates back to the end of World War II and the creation of GS.

The event is co-hosted by Columbia Veterans (http://columbiaveterans.org/), U.S. Military Veterans of Columbia University (http://columbiamilvets.com/), the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration (https://veterans.columbia.edu/), and the Columbia University School of General Studies (https://gs.columbia.edu).

For more information about Peter J. Awn's legacy, see the statement from University President Lee C. Bollinger (https://president.columbia.edu/news/passing-peter-awn).

Columbia University launched the Center for Veteran Transition and Integration to have a direct and lasting impact on the issue of veteran transition and upward mobility by creating and providing access to the best-in-class tools and programming veterans need as they transition from active service to college and the workforce.

By  drawing  on  the  lessons  and  experiences  gained  working  with  service members in transition over the past fifteen years, the Center will be a national center of excellence, focused on ensuring transitioning veterans receive access to world class programming and support designed to maximize their potential in education and the workforce.

About the Columbia University School of General Studies

The Columbia University School of General Studies (GS) is the premier liberal arts college in the United States for nontraditional undergraduate students seeking a rigorous, traditional, Ivy League education, including those who have served in the U.S. and foreign militaries.
