Mandible contouring is a surgical procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. The incisions that provide access to the mandible are very tiny and located inside the mouth, and this greatly reduces visible scarring. Afterward, patients are very likely to notice some swelling, and while this swelling may persist for several months, it decreases significantly by about three weeks post-op.  Patients must wear a soft dressing around the jaw and head around the clock for the first week; this will help to minimize any swelling and reduce discomfort.

Because the incisions are located inside the patient's mouth, self-absorbing sutures are used. Patients will need to return to Dr. Mardirossian about a week after the surgery for a check-up, but suture removal will not be necessary. Patients are instructed to use an antiseptic mouth rinse alongside various oral medications such as antibiotics and painkillers for the first seven days to facilitate healing and minimizes discomfort. For the first week, patients should avoid hard foods that require chewing and instead stick to liquids, soups, and soft foods.
