ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. - March 22, 2019 - PRLog -- Paul Davis of Elizabethtown (https://elizabethtown.pauldavis.com/), a leading provider of fire and water damage clean up and restoration services, has honored three company employees Jennifer Kuerzi, and husband and wife, Dale and Anita Wash. Jennifer has been with the Paul Davis office for 30 years, Dale for 25 years and Anita for 11 years. In honor of American Heart Month, the Paul Davis office wanted to share how a recent lifesaving occurrence proved that heart health and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training can be invaluable in the workplace and beyond.

On October 25, 2018, the three long-time workers started their day like any other. Little did they know their lives were about to change forever. They left the Paul Davis office and were in route to a customer's home to complete some restoration work. The three were all traveling in the same vehicle headed to a rural area near Elizabethtown. While driving, seemingly out of nowhere, Dale pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. As he put the car in park, he turned off the ignition and looked towards his wife. He said, " I can't do this anymore." Dale then lost consciousness and stopped breathing.

Jennifer and Anita were witnessing Dale having a massive heart attack. They immediately called 911, and then the two women pulled Dale from the vehicle. Both Anita and Jennifer were confused and panic-stricken, but Jennifer was able to quickly compose her nerves and started giving CPR compressions to Dale on the side of the road. In the heightened and time sensitive circumstance, Kuerzi was able to draw from the CPR protocols she had learned at a Paul Davis training.  After a few minutes, Anita was able to gather her composure and started giving her husband CPR breathing while Jennifer continued with chest compressions until help arrived.

The Hardin County Emergency Medical Services ambulance vehicle arrived in approximately nine minutes. EMS professionals continued with CPR as they rushed Dale to the hospital. Later, the group learned the heart attack was due to 100 percent blockage to Dale's heart.  And even though the blockage was cleared through surgery, Dale had to remain in a medically induced coma afterwards, as the medical team was unsure if he would recover and if so, to what extent. According to Barry Goodin, owner of the Paul Davis office, everyone at the company was distressed and on edge.

Thankfully, this story has a happy ending. Three days later, Dale awoke in the hospital and has since made a full recovery. He is already back at work and on light duty for the time being.

"This has been a moment that has hit home for our entire company. When renewing our CPR certifications this year, we became more aware. We understand now that the training is more than a requirement for workers compensation. It is important for us, our employees, and our sub-contractors to prepare for any emergencies we might encounter on the job," Goodin said.

"These lessons actually saved the life of our co-worker and dear friend. Jennifer and Anita performing CPR on Dale so quickly probably saved his life."

While they have offered CPR and first aid training in the past, this real-life story is why Barry Goodin and his wife and co-owner Debbie Goodin, decided to have every employee in the company certified. This year, they extended an invitation to any subcontractor who wished to complete the training as well.

"We believe it's important for everyone who works with us to have training in first aid, blood borne pathogens, and CPR. You never know if, when or where a situation like this could arise again. We're blessed that Dale survived and believe it is, in-part, due to this important training," said Debbie Goodin. "In honor of National Heart Month, we wanted to share this story with others. We want to spread awareness and hopefully help others recognize the signs of heart conditions," she said.

According to Anita, her husband Dale was diagnosed with acid reflux prior to their life-altering event. They know now that Dale's heartburn was a medical sign of heart blockage. "We want to share with everyone how important it is to keep up with CPR training. It could save the life of a coworker, a friend, a spouse. It did for us, and we will forever be grateful," said Anita.
